What is an Intranet?

An Intranet is like a mini-internet inside of a company, where only the staff in the organization can get access to the information.
The system is composed of the main server computer, where all the data resides and a network of desktop computers through which anyone in the company can get access to the data by running a standard web browser.
The data in the server can be anything from schedules, key files, company policies, statements, financial reports, databases, etc.

What benefits do I get from an Intranet?

One of the biggest benefits is the managing of information inside an organization and how this information becomes available to the people who need it when they need it.
At the end of the day, this makes for a more cohesive organization; one with all the members moving in the same direction, all at once. More cohesiveness makes things more effective and efficient. More efficiency means better service for your customers and better service translates into more business. All this means that a better information system can give you the edge you business need.

How will it save me time?

The best part about an intranet is that it keeps people more informed and it takes less time then traditional means of managing information. For example, E-mail is fine, but it is practically impossible to get across everything in one e-mail. It's great for a short message, but not for an update of everything that has happened in the last month or the past year in the department.
On the other hand, an Intranet is an on-line knowledge base, where all that information can be posted. The people responsible for this information place this information on the server and every person in the organization is immediately updated. This way, time is not wasted distributing endless paper copies that only some people will ever read and perhaps will misplace, but the information is published once and the people who need it can access it at any time thereafter.

What about security features?

A well designed intranet structure includes features such as firewalls so that no outsiders can access the information on the server and to prevent information to leak outside the network. Also, group accounts are established with authenticity through passwords so that only specific individuals have access to sensitive information, etc.

How much would it cost me?

Very little, in fact, most probably any typical company already has what is needed to create an intranet structure. All is needed is a dedicated computer to be configured as the main server, a person to maintain the system and training for the entire staff.
